With the recent investment in Margate now spilling over into Cliftonville, the area is turning from tired and run down to trendy and cosmopolitan. The properties are having a facelift and a vibrant community is building. Here are some of the great reasons to take a trip to Northdown Road.
The Grain Grocer
Opening it’s doors last year, The Grain Grocer offers delicious, organic and healthy light lunches, organic coffee, herbal tea and a scrumptious selection of smoothies.
The cafe has a relaxed, retro, upcycled feel and it’s the perfect place to meet friends or chill out on your own with a newspaper.
As well as the cafe, The Grain Grocer stocks a whole variety of organic food that you can purchase by the weight. Just take your container and fill it up with as little or as much as you need.
Banks Ale & Wine House
Banks has proved to be a friendly and popular addition to Cliftonville since it opened earlier this year.
Owners Steve and Julie offer a warm welcome to all who walk through their door and they stock a great selection of beers including guest ales that change regularly. There’s also plenty to choose from for the non-beer drinkers too.
Cliffs is a little bit of everything: cafe, record shop and yoga studio. You can enjoy a coffee made with beans roasted on site and tuck into an unusual sounding ‘bacon doughnut’.
When you’ve finished your coffee take a wander upstairs to see their selection of vintage and retro vinyls available for you to purchase.
If fine wine is your thing then head to Urchin Wines. They stock a wide selection from all over the world. You can buy a bottle and drink in or sample a selection at one of their wine tasting evenings.
Urchin Wines also host a number of events in conjunction with local eateries and suppliers. They recently had an Italian Supper Club with Bottega Caruso who are situated in The Old Kent Market and an Oyster Night with Hantverk & Found who can be found in Margate Old Town. Check out their website for information on forthcoming events.
